Featured Article: Early Star Wars Original Female Characters
Tuesday, September 8th, 2026 04:03 pm
ALTThis week’s Featured Article is Early Star Wars Original Female Characters!
When the original Star Wars trilogy gave audiences exactly three named women with speaking parts, Leia, Beru, and Mon Mothma (the last of whom had roughly 26 seconds of screen time), fans did what fans do: they wrote the women they wanted to see.
From 1978 to 1988, Star Wars fanzines were full of original female characters who smuggled spice, flew their own ships, swung lightsabers, and showed up as Han Solo’s sisters, mothers, daughters, love interests, and rivals. They were sassy, capable, and often wore a very familiar black vest-and-white-shirt combination. The “Solo clone” became so ubiquitous that fans both lovingly embraced and gleefully mocked the “Spacer Mary Sue” archetype with her Wookiee co-pilot, her fluency in forty languages, and her suspiciously Corellian backstory.
Curious about the women early Star Wars fandom invented before the galaxy had enough of its own? Head over to Fanlore to learn more!

Authors seem to be feeling more empowered to speak out about how faithful adaptations are, sometimes even before they’re being released. Under what conditions do you want to hear from authors about their concerns?
